What the 2026 Data Tells Us
Six patterns defining European AI investment in the first half of 2026.
Infrastructure is front-running application
AI Infrastructure accounts for 39% of all H1 capital tracked despite only 16% of deals. Compute, foundation models, and inference hardware are absorbing disproportionate capital ahead of the application wave.
AI SaaS is the volume layer
With 73 rounds, AI SaaS and enterprise automation leads on deal count by a wide margin. European businesses are actively deploying AI across sales, operations, and customer experience.
Physical AI overtakes HealthTech for #2
Robotics & Manufacturing (50 deals, €3.6B) has edged ahead of HealthTech (46 deals, €2.9B) as the second-largest application layer by both deal count and capital. Europe's AI bet is now as much about factories and hardware as it is about clinical software.
UK leads on both deals and capital
The UK accounts for 101 of 391 deals (26%) and €9.3B (53% of all capital tracked). Isomorphic Labs' €1.79B Series B, Nscale's two separate rounds, and Wayve's €1.02B Series D make it the dominant funding hub in this dataset by a wide margin.
April peaked, pace stayed elevated
82 deals in April is the highest single month, with May (70) and March (68) close behind. June eased to 64 but stayed 52% above January's 42. H1 totals 391 deals and €17.7B.
Defense & Security is a distinct, growing category
29 deals worth €416M went to AI-for-defense and security startups, spanning drone autonomy, sensing, and sovereign compute, a fast-emerging category now large enough to track on its own. Ukraine and Norway alone contributed five of these rounds, from battlefield ISR software to swarm-autonomy platforms.
